Valerie Otero named a 2021 American Physical Society fellow

Valerie K. Otero, professor of education, has been honored asĀ one of two prominentĀ University of Colorado Boulder faculty members who work to improve science education and have been designated as 2021 fellows by the American Physical Society (APS), the association has announced.

°Õ³ó±šĢżrecognizes members who have advanced the field of physics through research and publication or have made significant innovative contributions by application of physics to science and technology. Each year, no more than 0.5% of the APS’s non-student membership is recognized for election to the status of Fellow.

Otero, who is was elected alongside ofĀ CU Boulder'sĀ Katherine K. PerkinsĀ of the Physics Department,Ā isĀ professor of science education in the School of Education. She is also theĀ executive director and co-founderĀ of theĀ Colorado Learning Assistant Programand theĀ Ā andĀ co-founder and co-director of the CU BoulderĀ Center for STEM LearningĀ and theĀ .Ģż

The APS cited her for ā€œthe creation and broad dissemination of innovative physics curricular materials, pioneering contributions to physics teacher education and professional development, and for the development, implementation and wide dissemination of the Learning Assistant Model across diverse institutions.ā€
